Obituary of Fordyce St. John
Fordyce Barker St. John Jr., died at Meadow Ridge in Redding CT, on March 31, 2010 at 88.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, the former Lisa Polhemus, children and and children in-law, John and Megan St. John, Susan St. John, and Elizabeth and Chris Abelt, two grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Known as John St. John, he was the son of Dr. and Mrs. Fordyce B. St. John of Manhattan.
He was a graduate of Deerfield Academy and Princeton University, class of ‘45. Mr. St. John served with the 84th Infantry Division in World War II, including the Battle of the Bulge. He began his career in the oil industry, worked for Carter Oil, a division of Exxon, for 15 years and then at Chemical Bank. He retired from the Bank of New York as Chairman of the Natural Resource Department. The St. Johns were long-time residents of New Canaan, CT and Sagaponack, NY, where they have been members of the Bridgehampton Club since 1947. Mr. St. John was an avid golfer who served as President of the Country Club of New Canaan as well as a member of the New Canaan Zoning Board of Appeals and the Board of the New Canaan Inn. Mr. and Mrs. St. John moved to Meadow Ridge, a continuing care community in Redding, CT, in 2004.
