Obituary of Doris Hendricks
Doris Hendricks, 88, of Southbury, CT and formerly of Dix Hills, NY, passed away peacefully at Danbury Hospital on December 11, 2016.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Hendricks, and is survived by her daughter Irene Hendricks, son in law Steve Eno and her beloved granddaughters Caroline and Lauren Eno of New Canaan.
Doris was born September 30, 1928 to Edwin and Freda Stelges of Ozone Park, NY. She graduated with honors from John Adams High School, and received her Bachelor of Arts degree Summa Cum Laude in English from C.W. Post College of Long Island University. She taught English courses at C.W. Post and several high schools on Long Island, as well as actively volunteering with literacy programs for English as a Second Language with adult students and at Meals on Wheels.
She had a passion for New York Times crossword puzzles, drawing, reading, gardening, dogs, and Chinese checkers. Most of all she took delight in her grandchildren who were a source of humor, love, joy and inspiration to her. Doris was a devoted lifelong Lutheran and found endless comfort and strength in her faith which she carried with her always. Most recently she was a member of St. James Lutheran Church (ELCA) in Southbury, CT.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her honor to Lutheran World Relief, Heifer International, or ProLiteracy.
Calling hours will be at Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main Street, New Canaan, CT on Friday, December 16, 2016, from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 pm on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 884 Newfield Avenue, Stamford, CT. Burial will be at Calverton Military Cemetery at noon on Monday, December 19, 2016, 210 Princeton Boulevard, Calverton NY.
