Obituary of Bernardus Zwart
Bernardus (Ben) Mulder Zwart, Jr. died in peace at home December 7, 2016.
He was born on July 16, 1924 in Stamford, Ct. the first son of Bernardus Mulder Zwart and Virginia Madeleine Minson Zwart. After graduating from the Stamford High School in 1942, he enrolled at New York University School of Engineering. Having enlisted in the Army Air Corps, he was called into service in February of 1943 and became a pilot instructor and later a helicopter pilot until his discharge as Lieutenant in 1945. He then returned to New York University from which he received a degree in Mechanical Engineering in l949, becoming a member of Pi Tau Sigma and Tau Beta Pi. In 1947 he married Lila Rose Phillips, also a graduate of Stamford High School class of 1942. In 1952 he purchased property in New Canaan and after work and on weekends, built a home. He and his family moved there in the Spring of 1954. He was active as a Cub Master at the New Canaan Congregational church and built equipment for the Community Nursery School and sets for the Town Players of New Canaan. He owned an ERCoupe plane which he flew about for many years. He worked as an engineer for Peabody Engineering, Machlett Labs, Combustion Engineering, American Machine and Foundry, and Nuclear Engineering Services. He was a Registered Professional Engineer. He is survived by his wife of sixty-nine years, Lila Phillips Zwart and three children: Col.(Ret) Benton Phillips Zwart, MD,(Kay) of New Braunfels, TX, their children, Lauren Reece (Zachary) and their son Asa Bryan Reece; Kara Amavizca (Alex) and Rebecca; Christopher Wayne Zwart (Norma)of Trumbull, CT, and their children Alexandra and Andrew; Virginia Louise Fanelli of Hope, ME, and children, Madeleine McCunney (Patrick)and daughter, Fay;Anne Mackell; Grace Schliep (Andrew) and children Aurora and August; Sarah Mackell Collins and daughter, Lila. Also surviving is one brother, Gerrit Minson Zwart of West New Haven, CT. He was predeceased by a second brother, Murray Grant of Brantingham, New York. Arrangements were made for a private ceremony by the Hoyt Funeral Home with burial in Lakeview Cemetery.
