Obituary of Laurence Cass
Laurence John Cass, age 96, of Stamford , CT formerly of Stratford, CT died peacefully Friday, November 4, 2016 in Stamford with his loving family by his side. Born in Hoboken, NJ April 24, 1920 he was the son of the late Louis and Louise Garbarini Cass. Laurence was the husband of the late Helen Gurnowski Cass.
He is a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps, serving in France and England during WWII. He subsequently served many years in the US Airforce Reserves. He retired with the rank of Lt Colonel.
Larry was a graduate of Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey where he received his bachelor’s degree. He then received his MBA from Forham University. Larry worked as an aerospace engineer for Boeing and Lockheed, and as a nuclear Engineer for Con Edison and TransNuclear in New York.
He and his wife raised their five children in Saratoga , CA and then Stamford, CT. They then lived for 8 years in Oronoque Village, Stratford, CT, before returning to Stamford in 2012.
Larry was a quiet, hardworking man dedicated to his family. In younger years, he enjoyed tinkering with old cars in his garage, reading and collecting books of all kinds, playing cards, and growing trees and plants. He had a side business of growing prunes on a ranch in northern CA for many years and was proud to be a part of the agricultural industry. Larry was also an audiophile, collecting classical music recordings and listening to them on his many-speakered sound system
Laurence is survived by one son, Laurence J. Cass Jr and his wife Charlene of Weston, CT; three daughters, Alison C. Miller and her husband Christopher of Stamford, CT; Christina Catton and her husband James of Fuquay Varina, NC; and Susan Creaser and her husband John of Cary, NC. His one brother, Gene Cass, and sister, Rita Spitler, both of New Jersey, and nine grandchildren also survive. He was predeceased by his daughter Joanna.
His grandchildren are Leighton and Christopher Catton, and Ethan and Lauren Creaser all of North Carolina; Larry (III), Brian and Danielle Cass of Weston, CT; and Clara and Albert Miller of Stamford, CT.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday Nov. 8, 2016 at 10:00am in St Aloysius Church, Cherry Street, New Canaan at 10:00am Internment will follow in Our Lady Queen of Peace Cemetery, Stamford.
