Obituary of Dorothy Rae

Dorothy F. Rae, formerly of Champaign, IL, passed away on September 29, 2016 in Chicago, IL. Mrs. Rae was born on July 9, 1921 in rural Vincennes, IN, the oldest daughter of James D. and Fairy J. Farris. A 1939 graduate of Decker High School, Decker, IN, she was the first in her family to attend college, at Vincennes University and Indiana State University, graduating in 1943 with a degree in Education. She taught high school for six years in Indiana, relocating to Champaign to receive her Master’s Degree in education and counseling from UIUC. In 1958 she married U of I art history professor Edwin C. Rae and made Champaign her home for the next fifty years before moving to Chicago to be closer to her children. Mrs. Rae was an active member of First United Methodist Church, Champaign, IL, and an actively volunteered and participated with the University of Illinois YWCA, Meals on Wheels, the Catholic Worker House, the Antiques Study Group, the Foster Grandparents Program, and many others. During university sabbatical years in Dublin, Ireland, she continued her dedication to community service, volunteering for Meals on Wheels and with the Sisters of Charity in their ministry of educating disadvantaged children and youth from itinerant traveler families. Throughout her life she maintained an energetic, positive attitude, and a warm, generous personality towards all whom she met. She is survived by two children, Sarah Rae and Thomas Rae of Chicago, future daughter-in-law Lisa Mensik of Chicago, and two grandsons, Matthew Rae of Chicago and Liam Rae of Champaign. She is also survived by a brother, Joseph Farris, a sister, Carolyn Kelsey, both of Vincennes, IN, a sister-in-law, Rachel Farris, of West Lafayette, IN, as well as many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, and cousins. Two brothers, James Earl Farris and Paul Farris, preceded her in death, as well as her husband, and a daughter, Emily Caroline Rae. .
