Obituary of Margaret Robelen
Margaret McCulloch Robelen, age 92, a New Canaan resident for over 57 years, died peacefully Saturday, September 24, 2016 at Norwalk Hospital. Born in Glasgow, Scotland on October 31, 1923, she was the daughter of John and Winifred (Stephens) McCulloch. She was the widow of George A. Robelen and was also pre-deceased by her sister, Mary McCulloch Schiavo, and brother, Robert McCulloch.
Descended from a family of Scottish painters, some of whose works hang in national museums, Marge was herself an accomplished artist. She began painting in school in Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y. and eventually joined the Rowayton Arts Center where she earned many awards. Her paintings, some on commission, are in many homes in the area.
In her business life Marge worked at I.B.M. as a systems woman and executive assistant to the president. After raising her children she became a member of the New Canaan Board of Realtors and formed New Canaan Homes & Estates in1975. She was a founding member of The Lake Club in New Canaan, a former member of The Woodway Country Club in Darien and the Palm Beach Polo Club in Wellington, Florida. She was an avid gardener and bridge player, enjoyed golf and tennis and belonged to The New Canaan Dance Club and the Women’s Club of New Canaan.
More than anything Margaret loved her extended family and built a beautiful life around them. She is survived by her daughter, Carol Gilbride and husband Frank of Greenwich, son Craig and wife Lisa of Breckenridge, Colorado, daughter Elizabeth Rowley of New Canaan and eight grandchildren Lara (Robelen) Morgan and Madison (Robelen) Andersen, Bryce, Kyler and Kelsey Rowley and Jason, Marnie (Gilbride) McLaughlin and Randy Gilbride, and one great-grandaughter, Savannah Morgan.
Calling hours will be at Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main St., New Canaan, Ct. Friday September 30, 2016 from 4:00-8:00. The funeral service will take place at 11:00am on October 1, 2016 at the Congregational Church of New Canaan. Burial will follow at Lakeview Cemetery in New Canaan. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The National Multiple Sclerosis Society or the Salvation Army.
