Harriet Scott Taylor, known to all as “Scotty,” passed away unexpectedly at age 82 on Saturday August 27, 2016. She was born on October 30, 1933 in Baltimore, MD to Nicholas and Evelyn Scott. She married John Allan Taylor on June 4, 1960 in Greenwich, CT. Scotty and her husband John moved to Wilton in 1967 and raised their three children here. Scotty’s involvement in the Wilton community centered around her work at the Wilton Historical Society and Wilton Library History Room. Among her contributions at the Historical Society that were meaningful to her were her organization of the educational programs for the 2nd and 4th grade students in the Wilton schools, and her cataloging of the Walt Smith Tool Collection. In the Library History Room, she enjoyed assisting visitors, including Girl Scouts and high school students, in researching a variety of questions about local history. Through these two endeavors she developed a deep love for and extensive knowledge of Wilton history, and she loved sharing her knowledge with any and all. Scotty graduated from Kingswood School in Bloomfield, MI (1951) and received a BA in Music Literature from the University of Michigan (1955) and a BS in Nursing from Columbia University (1958). She was a nurse at Greenwich, Stamford, and Silver Hill Hospitals, before earning a Masters in Counseling at Fairfield University (1986). She also earned a Masters in Nursing, focusing in geriatric care, from Columbia University (1997, at age 64) while working at Wilton Meadows. Her quest for life-long learning was an inspiration to many. Scotty was passionate about genealogy and was thrilled to discover that ancestors of hers, and of John’s, had been among the early settlers of Wilton and Ridgefield, merging her genealogical research with her love of local history. Giving voice to her interest in history and architecture, she also spent several years as an independent residential real estate appraiser, working throughout Fairfield and Westchester Counties. One of Scotty’s other great loves was classical music, especially choral and piano music. She played the piano for her own enjoyment and sang in the Fairfield County Chorale for 12 years. Her time with the Chorale included service as Orchestra Contractor and as Chorale President for two years. Scotty was devoted to her family and greatly enjoyed spending time with them. She loved nature, especially the beach, and she found peace and solace watching wildlife around her home of over 40 years. Scotty is survived by John, her husband of 56 years, her son Bob and his wife Claudia, her daughter Barb, and her daughter Judy and her husband Mark, as well as her eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A private graveside service will be held. Donations in lieu of flowers may be directed to the Wilton Historical Society (), the Wilton Library (), or to support local choral music organizations.
