Obituary of Andrew O'Neill
Andrew ( Andy) O’Neill, age 84, of Norwalk, CT, formerly a longtime resident of New Canaan, died Wednesday August 17, 2016 at home with his loving family by his side. Born in Dublin, Ireland December 19, 1931 he was the son of the late Andrew and Annie Bracken O’Neill. Andy was the husband of the late Barbara Sheridan O’Neill who died in 2003.
He emigrated to America in 1963 from his home in Chapelized, Ireland, eventually winding up in New Canaan in 1968. It wasn’t long before his quick wit, generosity and unbelievable ability to remember, and deliver with near perfect comedic timing, literally thousands of jokes, endeared him to everyone he met. He soon became a fixture in town, and was easily recognizable as he drove around town in his truck, accompanied for many years by his German Shepherd, Shane, who was his constant companion. He was very proud of his service for over 35 years to the Oenoke Association on Heritage Hill Road where he served as property manager. His hard work and devotion to those who lived there made him synonymous with the place itself.
Andy loved being with family and friends, and truly was the “life of the party.” During his younger days in Ireland he was an avid soccer player, but once he discovered golf that became his all-consuming passion. The only thing he loved more than golf was his family, and he gifted his children with the invaluable knowledge that they had his unconditional love and support from the day they were born.
He was very proud, and fiercely independent. Although he was faced with numerous physical challenges for the last 10 years of his life, he never once complained or acted sorry for himself. He just got on with it, because that is what he did.
Andy is survived by a son, Glenn O’Neill, his wife Heather of Norwalk and their three children Griffin, Hillary and Mairin , a daughter, Caroline Mansfield and her husband Bryan of Athol, Mass, and their children, Lauren, and David.
Two sisters, Marie Baker of Tuckahoe, NY and Angelica Jennings of Dublin, Ireland also survive, along with numerous nephews and nieces, here and in both Ireland and England, who just thought the world of “Uncle Andy.”
A memorial Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, September 9, 2016 at 12:00 Noon at St, Aloysius Church, Cherry Street, New Canaan. Interment to follow inn Lakeview Cemetery.
There are no calling hours.
