Obituary of Dorothea Williams
Dorothea Culver Williams, 102, of New Canaan, passed away peacefully at Waveny Care Center on Thursday, August 11, 2016. She was the widow of Roderick Otis Williams and was predeceased by her eldest son, Alan Stuart Williams.
Mrs. Williams was born in Mamaroneck, NY, on July 1, 1914, daughter of the late Rudolph and Dorothy Farnum Culver. She is survived by her son, Bruce Nelson Williams, of Wilton, CT; two granddaughters, Margaret Innis Williams of Beverly, MA, and Lisa Hayes Williams of Burlington, CT; great-granddaughter, Alina Sage Dorothea O’Herron, who was born August 6, 2016 (to her great-grandmother's delight!); and several devoted nieces and nephews.
A woman of strong Christian faith, she was a parishioner at St. Paul's on the Green Episcopal Church in Norwalk for over fifty years. She served there in many capacities: as the first woman lector, Chalice Bearer, Subdeacon, Church Historian, and for several terms, a member of the Vestry. Other organizations to which she belonged include The Colonial Dames of America, Darien Book Aid, and Causeries du Lundi, one of the oldest women's literary societies in the country, of which she was former president. Mrs. Williams had also volunteered at Waveny Care Center for 35 years before she and her husband became residents there.
She loved the outdoors and in her younger years enjoyed racket sports, sailing, skiing, and gardening.
Blue Hill, Maine, was a favorite summer destination. Her infectious energy will long be remembered along with her inborn dignity and grace.
