Obituary of Kathleen Stone

Kathleen Murphy Stone was born June 14, 1923 in McDonald, PA. She was the youngest of 9 children, and daughter of James Louis and Eleanora Brousse Murphy. She died at Waveny Care Center in New Canaan, CT on May 19, 2016. Kathleen graduated from McDonald High School, PA, then received her nursing degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing. She spent 7 years at the University hospitals of Cleveland, Ohio, serving as head nurse. Her career was put on hold when she married George Stone in 1952, and became homemaker and mother for his two sons. They had two more children together, and raised all four in New Canaan, CT. Music was always a prominent part of Kathleen’s life. Having also studied music in college, she was an accomplished pianist and would accompany for choir practice, and voice students at Merit Music Studios. Singing in Saint Mark’s Choir for 35 years was a meaningful and important part of her life. Kathleen was very active in the New Canaan community, serving as Red Cross Bloodmobile nurse and chairman for 16 years, and volunteer at Norwalk Hospital. Her many other activities included Girl Scout leader, United Fund, Heart Fund, and Senior Citizens music programs. She served on the boards of New Canaan Community Concerts Association and Community Chorus. Active in the schools, she served on many committees, volunteered in the nurse’s office, was piano accompanist and substitute music teacher, and assisted in the library. Family ski trips, travelling to visit her sisters, and trips to Maine and Block Island, were some of her favorite times, enjoying family, hiking and the coastline. Kathleen is survived by her husband George Stone II, son George (Deborah) Stone III in WI, Gordon (Jennifer) Stone in VT, daughter Mary (Jim) Allen in WY, several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by son William Stone. A Memorial Service will be held for Kathleen and her husband George at St. Marks Episcopal Church in New Canaan, CT on November 12, 2016 at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mark’s music fund.
