Mary B. Long, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, loyal friend, music lover and avid gardener, died on Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at The Norwalk Hospital, in Norwalk, CT. She was born on January 15, 1933 in Mount Kisco, NY. Among Mary’s loves were life, spending time with family and friends, her employment by the New Canaan Public Schools and her membership in the congregation of The First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan, CT. Born Mary B. Toucey, she was raised in Somers, NY and Watch Hill, RI. She attended The Hickory Ridge School in Putney, VT and was graduated from the St. Mary’s in the Mountains school in Littleton, New Hampshire after which she attended Grinnell College in Iowa. She married Howard W. Long, Jr. in 1953 and lived in New Canaan for almost 30 years. She worked as a secretary for the New Canaan Public Schools for 35 years and loved being around young people. Mary was a member of the Hannah Benedict Carter Chapter, National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution. She chaired several committees for the chapter and for many years presented the DAR Good Citizens Award to the eighth grade essay winner at Saxe Middle School. As a choir member of The First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan, she derived great joy being surrounded by those who shared her passion for music. Mary Long was predeceased by her husband, Howard, and is survived by five children and their spouses. They are Vernona and Robin Price, Louisa and Charles Mueller, Howard and Amy Long, Henry and Julie Long, and John Long. She is also survived by six grandchildren. They are Sarah Price Tschorn and her husband Daniel, Amanda Price, Ben Mueller, Katie Long, William Mueller, and Megan Long. Very recently she welcomed into the world with great joy and happiness her first great grandchild Hannah Spencer Tschorn. A memorial service will be held for Mary Long at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 16, at The First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan.
