Obituary of Grover McClure

Grover Benjamin McClure, 90, of Redding, formerly of New Canaan, CT, passed away at home Tuesday, June 9 surrounded by his loving family. Known to all as Ben, he was a man who truly enjoyed life to the fullest. Ben was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Richmond, class of 1939. He joined the United States Navy before the start of World War II. He began his naval career as a PT boat skipper in the Aleutian Islands, ultimately becoming lieutenant commander of a large landing ship in the South Pacific. After the war, Ben returned to the United States to his wife Helen and daughters Carroll and Susan to start his career at Richardson Vick. In his nearly 50 years with the company, Ben acquired such noteworthy brands as Oil of Olay and Pantene, and helped the company expand into European, African and Asian markets. He became president of Vick International and executive vice president of Richardson Vick. The touching testaments at his retirement party in 1985 by colleagues attest to Ben's talents as both a boss and a visionary. Ben and Helen traveled extensively for both work and pleasure in their 65 years together, and their homes have always been filled with the mementoes of their trips far and wide. He was a great lover of sports too, and was a particularly accomplished tennis player. He also loved golf and his weekly poker game with his friends at the Meadow Ridge retirement community, where he and Helen have spent the last 8 years. Most important to Ben, though, was his family. Besides his nieces and nephews, Ben is survived by his loving wife Helen; his daughters Carroll Lewin of South Burlington, VT, and Susan Marchand of Paris; his grandchildren Anneliese Marchand Rhodes of London, Deborah Pastner of Minneapolis, MN, Celine Marchand of Paris, Eric Marchand of London, and Becky Pastner of Austin, TX; and his great-grandchildren Louise Revillon, Maddison Rhodes and Elsie Smith. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2009 at The First Presbyterian Church, Oenoke Ridge, New Canaan at 2:00 PM.
