Obituary of Roger Clark

Roger Ernest Clark died on March 1, 2016 at Waveny Care Center, New Canaan, CT after a long illness. He was 81 years old. Clark was born in Shrewsbury, England on June 12, 1934, son of Gilbert Albert George Clark and Gertrude Marion Jones Clark. He attended the Royal Wolverhampton School and served in the British Army as a Second Lieutenant in Kenya with the King Shropshire Light Infantry and in Malaya with the Parachute Regiment. While a student at the City of London College he won the Louis H. Kick Traveling Studentship and came to New York for three months as an intern at the advertizing agency Dancer, FitzGerald & Sample. He subsequently emigrated to America and continued his career in advertizing with Norman, Craig & Kummel, in New York and as Managing Director of their offices in Hamburg, Germany and in Jamaica. Clark then joined Cegmark, a New York based consulting firm specializing in introducing European products to the American market and later was a pioneer in personal computing, opening the first retail computer store in Connecticut. He worked with the Personal Computer Division of Xerox, authored a popular newsletter and seven computer books, primarily on spreadsheets and databases. He was a Director of The Kaufmann Fund, a small cap mutual fund now part of the Federated family of funds and a Director of Mediware Information Systems, a software company specializing in management of hospital computer systems. He retired in 2004 from Talcott & Clark, a fully computerized recruitment advertizing firm. In 1962, Clark married Mary Louise Tierney of White Plains, New York, who predeceased him in 1985. His brother John Graham Clark of Coventry, England also predeceased him. Always active in community affairs, Clark had been Secretary of the Fairfield County Chapter of American Mensa and a founding Director of Stamford Youth Soccer. He served on the Board of Directors of the Parenting Skills Center in Stamford and as Secretary of the New Canaan Exchange Club. He was a S.C.O.R.E. Counselor in Norwalk, a volunteer at the New Canaan Library, a member of the Senior Men’s Club and a member of First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan. In 1988 he married Catherine O. Gagnon and moved to New Canaan. Clark was an avid collector of antique lead toy soldiers and had acquired and traded an outstanding and varied collection. He is survived by his wife Kate, his daughter Penelope S. Clark of Norwalk, his son Alexander S. Clark (Patricia) of Wayne, PA, his stepdaughter Mary C. Henry (Scott) of Cohasset, MA and his stepson William A. Gagnon (Anne) of Norwalk, his niece Julie C. Harding of Burbage, England and eight grandchildren Nicholas, Louisa, Benjamin, Cecelia, Grace, Oliver, William, and Emily. The Family wishes to thank the staff of the Special Care Unit of Waveny Care Center for their loving concern over these many months. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at 2:00pm with a reception to follow in the church hall. Services have been entrusted to Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main St., New Canaan, CT 06840.
