Obituary of Mary Curcio
Lifelong New Canaan resident Mary G. Curcio passed away at her Urban Street home this past Saturday, February 20, 2016. She was 102 years old.
She was born on November 15th, 1913 to Mr. and Mrs. Sam Grallo (Grace). After matriculating through the New Canaan school system she met August O. “Augie” Curcio of Cos Cob through a blind date arranged by her sister. The two would marry and have two sons.
Following her husband’s untimely passing in 1960, Mrs. Curcio worked as a seamstress before opening La Petite Shop, a store for young women, downtown. She would later transition into the bridal business, opening Bridal Couture.
After becoming involved with the Nature Center Mrs. Curcio became an avid gardener, sowing her seeds every year right through this past summer. She was also renowned as a quintessential Italian chef. Her most famous dishes included pizzavita (fried dough), potato gnocchi, a family version of Shepherd’s Pie and lobster every Christmas Eve .
She would find yet another hobby in the early 1990s. Taking up painting after getting involved with the senior program at Waveny. She became quite accomplished and quite a fixture at Waveny. You would see her paintings displayed there all over.
Mrs. Curcio continued to remain active in her last years thanks to the help of Staying Put In New Canaan. In November of 20013 family and friends gathered to celebrate her 100th birthday at the Roger Sherman Inn in New Canaan. When asked what the greatest innovation she had seen in her lifetime was, she answered “Electricity!”
As aforementioned Mrs. Curcio was pre-deceased by her husband August O. “Augie” Curcio as well as her son August R. “Skip” Curcio through whom she had three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She is survived by her son Peter S. Curcio of Punta Gorda, FL and grandchildren Katherine M. Curcio and Peter John August Curcio both of Naples, FL. Calling hours will be held on Saturday, February 27th, 2016 from 11 A.M. to 1 P.M. at Hoyt Funeral Home located at 199 Main Street in New Canaan with burial to follow at Lakeview Cemetery.
