On May 7, 2009, Elaine Olson Smith, of Redding, CT, passed away peacefully after a long illness at the age of 76. Elaine is survived by her husband of 32 years, Gordon E. Smith; her daughters, Deborah Cook Legge and Rachel Cook Flanagan; son, Charles B. Cook, III; and brother, James A. Olson. She is further survived by 4 stepchildren and 5 grandchildren. Elaine was born in Darien, CT on February 16, 1933, and lived there for 74 years and more recently moved to Redding, CT. Her parents, J. Arthur Olson and Viola D. Olson, also resided in Darien. Elaine attended the Darien Public Schools and graduated from Colby Jr. College. She kept in touch with many school friends including her friends from elementary school. Elaine volunteered her time, enthusiasm and energy for many years at Stamford Hospital, the Darien 60 Plus Club and The Children’s Aid Society. Elaine was a great athlete and always loved playing or watching a good game of tennis. She will be remembered for her knowledge of birds and her green thumb. Gary Smith conducted a private family service at Lakeview Cemetery in New Canaan, CT., on May 11th. A reception for friends and family will be planned at a later date.
