Obituary of Patricia McIntire

Patricia M. McIntire of Darien, Connecticut, died peacefully on February 8, 2016. Patricia was born in London, England on April 6, 1927. She was the daughter of Henry Walter Mickleburgh and Frieda Hagemeyer Mickleburgh. Patricia and her family, (including her brother, Walter), emigrated to the U.S. during World War II, and they settled in Chestnut Hill, PA. Patricia graduated from the Agnes Irwin School in Rosemont, PA and then graduated from Chestnut Hill College with a BA in English. She also attended the University of Pennsylvania where she received a MA in English. Adventurous and studious, Patricia also studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, the Sorbonnes in Paris and Oxford University. While studying at Oxford's summer program, she met William T. McIntire II, who she eventually married in New York City in May, 1954. After living and working in New York City, Pat and Bill moved to Tarrytown, NY for several years. By 1960, they had relocated to Darien. With their two young sons, Tred and Henry (Dickson). Pat was a devoted mother and active teacher. She taught the Head Start program in South Norwalk for several years, after which point she worked as a substitute language teacher in the Darien Public School System. Pat was an active member of the Darien community. One of her favorite organizations was the Darien Community Association for which she served as Program Co-Chairman for many years. At the DCA, she enjoyed planning programs and attracting interesting speakers to Darien. She was also the founder of the Women In Science program, which introduced school aged students to women pursuing interesting careers in science. Upon Bill’s retirement from Wall Street, Pat and Bill made two trips to Africa where Bill worked on consulting assignments in Botswana and Zimbabwe. Pat always loved to travel and visited many parts of the world. In addition to their family trips to Europe, Pat and Bill also visited Egypt, India, Russia, Vietnam and China, to name a few. After raising her two sons, she was actively involved in the lives of her nine grandchildren. Pat thoroughly enjoyed attending their soccer and lacrosse games, concerts, theater arts performances and family celebrations. More recently, she had been able to spend time with her three great-grandsons. Patricia is survived by her two sons, William Tredick McIntire III and his wife, Lizzie of Dover, MA; and Henry Dickson McIntire and his wife, Dawn of Darien. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Peter, Abby, Gordon, Hannah, Sam, Diana, Liza and Ryan, and her great-grandsons, Will, Cutler and Eli.
