Obituary of Sven Englund

Sven William Englund entered the church triumphant in peace on Thursday, December 10th, 2015 in Norwalk Hospital at the age of 94, after a brief illness. He was surrounded by his loving family at the time of his passing. He was the husband of the late Alice Ruth Englund. Sven was born on February 20, 1921 in Brooklyn, New York, the only child of Captain Sven A. N. Englund and Anna Peterson Englund. He graduated from Boy’s High School and went on to earn his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Polytechnic University in Brooklyn. Sven worked on the World War II butadiene program and then in the U. S. Army in the War Department Technical Division. His professional career was spent in the design and construction of chemical plants with emphasis, in the last 25 years, on air and water pollution abatement. He was employed at Olin Corporation headquarters and John Brown E & C Inc., both in Stamford. He remained active in the American Institute of Chemical Engineers well past his retirement. Sven married Alice Ruth Moeller on September 2, 1950 at the Parkville Congregational Church in Brooklyn, New York. Sven and Alice lived for several years in Cincinnati, Ohio where their son Sven Richard was born, moved to Emmaus, Pennsylvania where their daughter Laura Kristen was born and finally moved to New Canaan in 1958. In New Canaan, Sven was active as an adult leader of Boy Scout Troop 1. He was appointed to the Environmental Commission where he served as Chairman for 9 years and then on the successor Inland Wetlands Commission for 26 years. He earned a State of Connecticut Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in protecting the environment and wetlands, and a “Sven Englund Day” in New Canaan proclamation from the First Selectman for December 15, 2014. He was also active in the Senior Men’s Club of New Canaan, the Poinsettia Club and many other civic activities. Sven loved his church, the United Methodist Church of New Canaan, through worship, service and the fellowship in Christ with its members. Sven and Alice traveled widely in the U.S. and around the world with their family and friends and even achieved one of Alice’s dreams to set foot on Antarctica. Time spent with Alice’s extended family around Oneida, New York held special meaning for him. He always returned to Sweden to visit with his family and especially his cousins Ingrid Englund and Birget Ellstrom, both deceased, and his beloved cousin Kerstin Hagberg who survives him. After Alice’s death, Sven moved to the New Canaan Inn where he enjoyed participating in activities with his new and dear friends. Sven is survived by his son Sven, married to Rita, of New Canaan, and their children Kristen and Sven A.; and his daughter Laura, married to Fred Worstell, of Bernardsville, New Jersey, and their two children Carolyn, married to Zachary Hvizdak, and Matthew. A memorial service will be held at the United Methodist Church of New Canaan, 165 South Avenue on Saturday, January 2nd, 2016 at 1 PM. Memorial donations may be made to the Waveny Life Care Network, 3 Farm Road, New Canaan, CT 06840. Services have been entrusted to Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main St., New Canaan, CT 06840
