Irene C. Byrne, age 96, a longtime New Canaan resident died peacefully Monday November 30, 2015 in Woodbridge, CT. Born in Stamford December 30, 1918 , she was the daughter of the late Peter and Mary Scurek Smolen. She was the wife of the late Lawrence Byrne. She had worked in retail sales for Bloomingdales in Stamford for years. Irene enjoyed traveling, was an excellent seamstress and quilter and was quite active in the Springdale Senior Center. She was survived by her niece Kathi Hunt Pawlak , nephews, Richard and Stanley Bogacki ,one sister Lucy Verrastro of Seymour, CT, two stepsons, Lawrence E. Byrne, Jr. of New Canaan and Robert W. Byrne of Florida, and a step daughter Beverly Walker of New Hampshire. She was predeceased by sisters, Helen Hunt and Anna Bogacki. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, December 4, at 12:00 Noon at the Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main Street New Canaan. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery. The family wishes to thank the staff of Vitas Hospice for the excellent care and compassion given to Irene.
