Obituary of Claire Johnstone

Claire Joyce (Lundberg) Johnstone passed away September 17, 2015 in New Canaan, CT. Claire, along with her husband John (deceased), were recent residents of Palm City Florida and previously long time residents of New Canaan, CT and Youngstown, NY. Claire was born in Brooklyn, NY, on June 28, 1932, to Claudia (Whitehouse) and John (Jack) Lundberg. She was the second of four daughters. Her early years, during the Depression, were spent in New York, New Brunswick, Canada, Boston and Maine. Claire started high school at Hollis High School in Maine, where she was a basketball player, quick changing to cheerleader at half time. Moving back to New York, she graduated from Far Rockaway High School in 1950, where she met John W. Johnstone. She worked as a legal secretary on Wall Street after attending Hunter College and Delehanty Institute. Claire and John were married in 1956, the beginning of a 54 year adventure. In their time together they lived in New York City, Cincinnati (OH), Cherry Hill (NJ), Lewiston (NY), Tacoma (WA), Youngstown (NY), New Canaan (CT) and Palm City (FL). She raised three sons, a house full of men, compared to her youth in a house full of women. Claire had a passion for learning, returning to school in 1977 at Niagara County Community College. That experience reignited in her a drive to complete her studies and in 1993 she graduated Cum Laude from Manhattenville College, with a Masters of Arts. Ahead of her time, Claire wrote a thesis on the untapped and under appreciated power that women could bring to the business world. She possessed an incredible intellect, and supported diverse views with a balanced perspective. Travel and grandchildren became the light of Claire’s life. John and Claire travelled extensively throughout Europe, Japan, Africa, and South America, as well as the United States. Her legacy lives on in the lives of her six grandchildren: Jack, William, Aelish, Jenny, Erik and Sean. Claire is survived by her three sons: Robert, James and wife Suzanna, Thomas and wife Cynthia. She is also survived by her sisters Jacqui, husband Gene Imes and Joan, husband Joe Koller. We will all miss her wit and positive outlook on life. Funeral services are being arranged through Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main Street, New Canaan, CT 06840. Telephone 203-966-0700. A celebration of Claire’s life is planned for 11am on September 24, 2015 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 111 Oenoke Ridge, New Canaan, CT 06840. A reception will follow. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the: Cure Alzheimer’s Fund, 34 Washington Street, Suite 200, Wellesley Hills, MA 02481.
