Hilda J. Mollineaux, 99, great-grandmother of six Hilda J. Mollineaux, age 99, died peacefully June 16, 2015 at the New Canaan Inn with her loving family by her side. Hilda was the mother, grandmother and great grandmother of New Canaan residents. Hilda Tereis Johnson was born in Locust Valley, NY on December 15, 1915. She was the daughter of the late Axel and Hanna Anderson Johnson, who were immigrants from Sweden. Hilda grew up on Long Island “Gold Coast” estates, where her father was the superintendent and head gardener. She helped with the family garden, walked to a one-room schoolhouse and went to the market with a horse drawn wagon. She remarked that she played with the animals on the estate, her German shepherd, the cow, the horses and the chickens, as she and her brother were the only children living there. Hilda graduated from Mineola High School in 1934 and from The Mary Nash School. She was a secretary in an insurance office, and later a secretary to a school superintendent. Hilda met her husband George A. Mollineaux Jr .when she went into the bank where he worked. They were married for 63 years until his death in 2005. Hilda and George raised their family in Williston Park, Long Island and retired in 1978 to Orient Point, Long Island, where they had a home with a view of the lighthouse. Both enjoyed anything near the water. They were active in the Oysterponds Historical Society. Hilda was especially proud of her Swedish heritage, enjoyed quilting and was devoted to her family. After her husband’s death in 2005, Hilda moved to New Canaan to be near her daughter. She enjoyed nine years at the New Canaan Inn, where she was an active participant in many activities. Hilda is survived by her daughter, Karen Ferguson and her husband Tom of New Canaan and her son, George A. Mollineaux III and his wife Jean of Byfield, MA. Her grandson Matthew Ferguson, wife Kate and three great-grandsons reside in New Canaan. Her granddaughter Elizabeth Cook, husband Tom and great-granddaughter live in Byfield MA. Her grandson Steven Mollineaux, wife Kristin and two great-grandsons live in Newbury, MA Hilda was predeceased by her brother Herbert Johnson. Interment was held in the family plot in Greenfield Cemetery, Long Island, NY.
