Madame Schless was a teacher with an extraordinary range of knowledge, and I’m forever grateful that I had the privilege of learning from her for two years in high school. I still have great admiration for her ability to come up with detailed, contemporary references to buttress an argument from just about any historical period. At the end of my senior year, she gave me the French Award, and to present it she wrote a very clever limerick, and then made it work perfectly in both English and French. I will always remember her as an ideal teacher: the kind whose example sets the highest standard, and who inspires us to do our very best.
