Obituary of Elizabeth Vest
Elizabeth Vest Mack, 79, of New Canaan, CT passed away on April 18, 2015 at Sunrise of Stamford of complications due to Alzheimer’s disease. . Elizabeth was born on February 8, 1936 in Salem, MA to the late Paul Thomson and Rebecca Benson Haskell.
Elizabeth, known as Lee, was educated at Shore Country Day School, St Mary’s in the Mountains (now the White Mountain School) and Sweet Briar College (class of 1957). Lee was a Debutante at the Salem Assembly in 1953. After graduating from Sweet Briar she lived in Washington DC where she worked for a short time with the CIA. There she met and married her first husband George Graham Vest IV. In 1962 they moved to New Canaan, CT. They were married for 36 years until his death in 1994.
Lee was very active in the volunteer community in New Canaan, especially the Voluntary Action Center of Southwestern Fairfield (VAC) where she served on the Board and in the public relations department, the United Way and the Junior League of Stamford Norwalk. Lee was president of the Junior League from 1974 to 1976.
In the late 1970’s Lee became a travel agent and was an associate at New Canaan Travel World. Enjoying travel not only to her favorite locations in France but also, China, Africa and New Zealand. She retired in 1998.
In 1997 Lee married Charles L Mack of Darien, and the couple settled in New Canaan but also spent time in New Seabury, Massachusetts. Lee also stayed active in volunteer work serving on the boards of Lockwood Mathews Mansion and Connecticut chapter of the Colonial Dames. As well as working on specific projects with St Mark’s Church. Lee and Charlie continued to travel in Europe, Bermuda and the Virgin Islands.
Lee was a member of the New Canaan Country Club, the Stamford Yacht Club, and the Nutmeg Curling Club.
In Addition to her husband Charlie, Lee is survived by her son G. Graham Vest and his wife Carolyn of Burlingham, NY and her daughter Sarah B. Vest and her husband Hassan Yousef of Doha, Qatar. Also surviving Elizabeth are her three grandchildren. Elizabeth was pre-deceased by her brother, Paul T. Haskell. A Memorial Service to honor Elizabeth’s life will be held on May 20th 2015 at 2pm at St. Marks Church in New Canaan. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Elizabeth’s memory can be made to Alzheimer’s Association (ALZ.org under the name Lee Vest Mack).
