Obituary of Barbara Coughlin

Barbara Ann (Blunt) Coughlin, age 87 of New Canaan, CT formerly of Stamford, died Sunday March 29, 2015 at Norwalk Hospital with her loving family by her side. Born in Evanston, Illinois, July 23, 1927, she was the daughter of the late John E. Blunt III and Barbara Thorp Blunt. Barbara (Ann) was the wife of the late Dr. Frank R. Coughlin, Jr. MD who died in 2014. Barbara graduated from New Trier High School and attended Warwick Woods Camp in Wisconsin where she learned to sail – a love she had her entire life; encouraging her husband and children to learn to sail. She graduated from Vassar College with a degree in Chemistry and attended Yale Medical School for 3 years, working briefly in research for Dr. Janet Travell, Pres. John F. Kennedy’s Pain Management Specialist. Keeping ties with family was very important to Barbara; she encouraged all her children to stay in touch with their relatives and enjoyed being surrounded by her family, especially at holidays. Visits with her relatives and a few very close family friends meant a lot to her. Material possessions did not mean a lot to her, (except for her canoe and sailboat). She loved reading, nature, music, babies, birds, cats and dogs, playing cards with and reading to her grandchildren, watching Wimbledon, drinking tea, making cream cheese and olive sandwiches as well as memorable soups. She instilled a love of nature, the water, animals and exercising in all her children as well as music, a love her husband also shared. They went to many concerts together and travelled, including Cuba. They also attended Mass together on Sundays; both were devout Catholics. Most recently, for 2 years, Barbara was a resident at “The Village” at Waveny Care Center. Fortunately, she had a top medical team, was diagnosed early, put on medication right away which kept her enjoying her life, frequent visits from family members, new friends and activities at “The Village”. She was very happy there and much loved by all. Her family is very grateful to the kind, loving staff at “The Village” for their great care of Barbara. Survivors include her eight children: Hilary Coughlin Loftus of Westbrook, CT; Mary Jackson and her husband Charles of Southbury, CT; Patricia Papale and her husband P.J. of Norwalk, CT; Christopher F. and his wife Nanan Joehana-Coughlin of Boston, MA; Geoffrey B. Coughlin of Stamford, CT; Daniel T. Coughlin and his wife, Natasha, of New Canaan, CT; Isabel Coughlin and her husband, Rocco Alianiello of Westport, CT; David C. Coughlin and his wife, Melissa, of Darien, CT and 12 much-loved grandchildren. A sister, Estelle Blunt King, of Wayzata, Minnesota and a brother and sister-in-law, John T. Blunt and Susan Fencl, of Village of Golf, Florida, and surrogate sister/cousin: Mary T. Dailey of Sheridan, Wyoming and other beloved cousins, nieces and nephews. A Memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday April 8, 2015 at 10:00 am at St Matthews Church, 216 Scribner Avenue, Norwalk. Interment will take place in the family plot at St Raymonds Cemetery, Bronx, NY.
