Obituary of Beverly Greenberg

Beverly M. Greenberg, 92, of New Canaan, CT passed away on March 6, 2015 at the Waveny Care Center in New Canaan. Beverly was born on February 5, 1923 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Morris and Fannie Chorost Eisman. She was born early and weighed only 3.5 pounds (and before the invention of incubators, they had to use hot water bottles to keep her warm). She grew up during the Great Depression and the Boardwalk days of Coney Island in the 1930s and ‘40s. It was in Brooklyn that she met photographer Sydney Greenberg, her late husband and best friend of 68 years. They moved from Brooklyn to the suburbs of New Canaan in 1954. Beverly first worked for the phone company in New Canaan before becoming the secretary for The New Canaan Public Schools Department of Food Services in the early 1960’s then she became the secretary to Dr. Rubin, the principal of Center School, in the late ‘60s. Before retiring, she also worked at the New Canaan High School library and in the office at West School. Beverly organized and raised funds to bring the first Chanukah Menorah to God's Acre in New Canaan. She was appointed to the Health and Human Services Commission of New Canaan by the First Selectman and served on the board of Waveny Care Center as well. Beverly assisted her husband, Syd, in his role as a Justice of the Peace and for over 40 years she helped him marry hundreds of couples before becoming a Justice of the Peace herself. Beverly’s interests and activities were diverse and always growing. She supported Norwalk Hospital with her knitted baby sweaters and hats and coordinated volunteers to help with this project. She enjoyed painting and took classes at Waveny Senior Center. She was an avid letter writer to most anyone whose address she had, which prepared her for classes in memoir writing where she captured the stories of her life for her family and friends. Bev was a volunteer for many events at the Carriage House and other activities in and around New Canaan. She was on the New Canaan Commission for the Elderly, and was most recently a resident of the New Canaan Inn where she was a mentor and helper to staff and residents. When she was not running around for her volunteer work, her house on Parade Hill Road was always open for visitors, as was her heart, making anyone who dropped by feel right at home. Beverly is survived by her two sons, and four grandchildren: David L. Greenberg, his wife Laurie, daughters Mia and Tess of Beverly, Massachusetts, and Philip J. Greenberg, his wife Jaime, son Jacob and daughter Isabel of Brooklyn, NY. She is also survived by her adoring nieces and nephews and many friends, who loved to pop by for a visit and were always welcomed with a big smile and a heart-warming hug and urged to have a nosh. A private service was held on Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at Hoyt Funeral Home in New Canaan. Interment followed at Beth Moses Cemetery, West Babylon, NY, where she was laid to rest beside Syd. Later this year, in New Canaan, the family will hold a public celebration of Beverly’s life. For online condolences, please visit www.hoytfuneralhome.com.
