Elizabeth “Betty” Carroll Quinn Croke died unexpectedly on Monday, February 16, 2015 at her home in New Canaan, CT. Betty, born on Oct. 10, 1937 in Woodside, NY, was predeceased by her parents, John D. Quinn and Agnes F. Quinn and by her faithful and loving companion of 16 years, Edward Hale.
She is survived by her son, William H. Croke III of Martha’s Vineyard, MA and her eight siblings: Jack Quinn Jr. of San Francisco, CA; Gerald Quinn (Justine) of Wilton, CT; Barbara Flanagan (Tracy) of Westbrook, CT; Karen Randon (Christian) of New Canaan; Virginia Zahner (Mike) of Marshfield, VT; Regina Madigan (Jim) of Unionville, CT; Kevin Quinn (Kate) of Ridgefield, CT; and Dennis Quinn (Joan Cheever) of San Antonio, TX. Betty attended Saint Agnes High School, College Point, NY and Berkeley School, New York, NY. She worked at Foote, Cone & Belding advertising agency in New York City, and was employed for 30 years at The New Canaan Board of Realtors. She was also a volunteer at Norwalk Hospital and at The New Canaan Library.
Betty was a voracious reader and an enthusiastic fan of The New York Times puzzle page. She loved to dance, and spent four years studying ballet in New York City. Betty was an excellent cook and baker and the week before Thanksgiving she’d ask her siblings to pick their favorite pie, often adorning the dessert table on Turkey Day with 12 different pies baked from scratch. She loved all things Irish and spent many hours knitting Irish sweaters, hats and mittens for her son, Bill, and her much loved nieces and nephews.
Betty and her companion, Ed Hale, spent many weeks traveling to Europe, and the two shared a passion for ballet, music, opera, Broadway shows, and the theater. They also enjoyed trips to the Tanglewood Music Festival, and they both loved old movies and British TV. Betty also treasured her time at the beach, particularly Roton Point in Rowayton, CT. Betty would often ask her son, Bill, to recount his favorite memories from his childhood, and she always had a big smile while listening to his stories. Above all, Betty loved and cherished her time with her family and friends.
The family would like to thank especially, Jeb Swift and the entire staff of The New Canaan Library for their wonderful friendship with Betty and for taking such good care of her. We also want to thank her caretaker, Lina Barrera, for her love and patience.
