Obituary of Gisela Fort

Gisela von Scheven died on December 23, 2014 at Norwalk Hospital after a long illness. Her family was at her side. Gisela was born in 1933 in Frankfurt, Germany, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter von Scheven. The family moved to New York City in 1948 and Gisela enrolled at the High School of Music and Arts. From there she went to Barnard College, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree and was Senior Class President, and then went on to Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, where she received her Masters Degree. After graduation she worked for Standard Oil of New Jersey and then the editorial research department of the Readers Digest, where she specialized in financial and political articles. Gisela married Frederick L. Fort in 1961 and they resided in New York City until 1965, when they were transferred to Venezuela for a period of six years. Their two children, Elizabeth Louise, of New York City, and Margaret Anne, of Rye, New York, were born in Caracas. Following their return to the United States they settled in Wilton, Connecticut where they have resided ever since. Gisela became quite active in town activities, having been prominent in the establishment of the School Bus Safety Program. She was also elected to several terms on the town Board of Education. Beginning in 1992 they also spent four years in Mexico City. Gisela particularly enjoyed their tours of Latin America and was quite active in the 'ex-patriate' community, learning Spanish and local history. She was a long tome member of the Wilton Riding Club and an avid participant in Barnard College alumni activities. Gisela's maternal grandfather was the noted Anthropologist Franz Weidenreich, who spent many years in China and was instrumental in identifying and classifying the Peking Man. Gisela loved cooking, but not gardening; enjoyed traveling, museums, and exploring, but not going to football games (she confided that it took fifty years of 'being dragged' to games before she figured out what they were doing). One of her happiest moments was that her granddaughter, Nikki, was born on her birthday. In addition to her husband, daughters and granddaughter, Gisela is survived by her brother George, of San Francisco. Services will be private.
