Obituary of Jean Hickey
HICKEY- Jean Louise Lutz, died on Thursday evening, November 19, 2009 surrounded by her family at Greenwich Hospital. Mrs. Hickey was a resident of the Waveny Care Center in New Canaan, Connecticut.
A native of Chicago, Illinois, Jean was the only child of Leonard and Cora Lutz, and was born on December 1, 1921. Her Chicago childhood was the source of wonderful memories of growing up in the Edgewater Beach Apartments next to Lake Michigan, and her twin cousins Gordon and Norman Jeppesen. Jean was a great believer in education and was a proud graduate of the Francis Parker School in Chicago. She attended Carlton College in Northfield, Minnesota, and graduated from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, with a bachelor's degree in Psychology. Jean's family history stretched back to the beginnings of the United States of America, and she was proud to be a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Her great-grandfather, John Lutz, was a Captain in the 107th Ohio Volunteers and fought at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg during the Civil War.
While employed by Chicago and Southern Airlines, Jean met and fell in love with William Hugh Hickey of Pittsfield, Massachusetts. They were married in Chicago, Illinois on November 8, 1947. Together they raised five sons starting in Chicago, then Minnesota, Valley Forge in Pennsylvania, and then Stamford, Connecticut. Jean and Bill, who died December 29, 1976, are survived by their five sons, Brian Leonard Hickey of Greenwich, Connecticut, Owen Ford Hickey, of Redding, Connecticut, Kevin Hugh Hickey, Silver Spring, Maryland, Robert Lutz Hickey, of Lynbrook, New York, and Stephen Gerard Hickey of Hingham, Massachusetts, along with daughters-in-law Karen Jeff Hickey, Suzanne Nicoll, Alice Cahill, Patricia Verdon Hickey, and Eleanor Crowley Hickey, and seven grandchildren, Laura, Brennen, Kathleen, Aileen, Emma, Thomas, and Evan.
Following her husband's death, Jean worked for the Union Trust Bank and was well known to patrons of the Ridgeway branch of the bank in Stamford. Jean was a Eucharistic Minister at St. Catherine of Sienna Roman Catholic Church in Riverside, Connecticut, where she delighted in attending Midnight Mass on Christmas. Later in life Jean lived at the Schoolhouse Apartments before calling Waveny Center her home. Jean's sons are profoundly grateful for the care and love extended to their mother by the staff, volunteers, residents and families of the community of Waveny Care Center.
