Obituary of Mary Sherry

Mary Margaret Sherry (Peg), 88, of New Canaan, CT passed away peacefully on November 23, 2014 at her home at the New Canaan Inn. Peg was born on November 12, 1926 in Oneonta, NY to the late Joseph A. and Hilda Morris Sherry. Ms. Sherry graduated from Montclair State College, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education. She received a master’s degree in English from Middlebury College and a master’s in theatre and speech from Purdue University. Moving to New Canaan in 1961. Peg taught Literature, speech and theatre, and was a director and coordinator of the drama program at New Canaan High School for nearly thirty years. After a teaching career spanning 38 years, she became a speech consultant working with students and Corporation Executives. Peg approached life with passion and dedication, serving as a mentor and working towards fostering success in others. She was an active member in the community and the theatre, particularly the Town Players of New Canaan. She had a lifetime of achievements, including directing over 75 plays, receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award, and a member of many Boards and organizations, including the American Association of University Women. In addition to volunteering, Peg inspired others with her love of life, education, and culture. She had an exquisite curiosity that led her to walk the Great Wall of China, serve as a mentor to businesswomen in Russia and enjoyed going to the theatre with friends. Peg cherished the joys of this world, and the joy that her life added to this world will continue to be cherished. She is survived by her brother, Joseph Sherry and his wife Louise of Pine City, Minnesota; her sister-in-law Louise Sherry of Poughkeepsie, NY and Longboat Key, FL; She was predeceased by her brother William Sherry, her sister and brother-in-law Elizabeth and John Broere, her sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Lewis Vliet. She was also the proud aunt of many nieces and nephews. A Memorial Mass to celebrate Peg’s life will be held on Saturday, November 29, 2014 at 1:30pm at St. Aloysius Church, New Canaan, CT.
