Obituary of William Harold Jones
William (Bill) Harold Jones, a lifetime resident of New Canaan, passed away at the age of 101 on December 20, 2023. He was born December 8, 1922, in New Canaan, Connecticut to the late Arthur Jones and Agnes Hartery Jones. Bill attended New Canaan High School and graduated in 1940. He was a World War II Marine who served in the Pacific on the aircraft carrier USS Essex from 1942-1945. Bill returned to New Canaan and joined the New Canaan Police Department in 1946. The same year he joined the New Canaan Fire Company as a volunteer firefighter and holds the distinction of being the longest-standing member to date. Bill served as a police officer for 31 years, retiring as a Lieutenant in 1977. During his service he had the honor of training at the National Academy of the Federal Bureau of Investigations in 1965.
As an avid athlete, Bill participated in baseball, basketball and football. He was later inducted into the Old Timers Hall of Fame. He received special recognition from the state of Connecticut for his military service in WWII and his service as a police officer in New Canaan. He was also a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 653 at New Canaan.
William H. Jones is survived by his wife Bertha Petropolis Jones, his devoted daughter Ingrid Jones O’Reilly; his grandchildren Kristin (Carlos) Pizan and Katelyn (Brian) Abrahamsen and Garrett (Annelise) O’Reilly. He is also survived by his three great grandchildren, Rylan and Kinsley Abrahamsen, Grayson O’Reilly and many close relatives including Ruth LeBlanc Jones and Adam Jones. Bill is predeceased from his first wife Ellen Skoglund Jones, his daughter Karin Ellen Jones and his five siblings Arthur Jones, Vivian Evernham, Burton Jones, George Jones and Elizabeth Nichols.
Services will be held at Hoyt’s Funeral Home in New Canaan. The wake will be held on Friday, December 22nd from 4-7pm. On Saturday, December 23rd a funeral service will be held at Hoyt’s Funeral Home at 9:30am followed by the burial at Lakeview Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held at 12pm at Zody’s 19th hole in Stamford.
