My sincerest condolences to the Hersam family. Don was a true gentleman. When I was in high school, I sat on the Board of Genesis, Inc. with Don. Even though I was a teen he listened to what I had to say and made me feel valued. During the turbulent times of the Vietnam War, I wrote a letter to the Advertiser. Don could have refused to publish it or heavily edit it. He did neither. He was also always very kind and made a point to ask after my family.

My mom and dad- Anthony and Marie Russo were active New Canaanites and members of St. Aloysius and always admired their friendship with Don. While we offer our prayers to all of you as you work through the loss of a wonderful member of the community, we also offer gratitude for the kindness and joy he brought to our parents and honor him for a life well lived. Sending so much love and prayers to Don's Family. He was an incredible man who inspired and supported me and so many others over the many years. It was such an honor to know him. He was not only a news pioneer but a pillar of his community, state, and country. A patriot who cared so much and gave so much to improve our lives. His was truly a life well lived. He will be long remembered for how much he contributed so others could benefit. God Bless him and his family. See you in the next edition Don.

My deep sympathy to the Hersam family. Don was a. wonderful member of the New Canaan community.. One could listen for hours to his storied of New Canaan. I loved our visits when after researching for stories at the New Canaan Historical Society, he would wait for Jeanne to pick him up and he would tell his stories of New Canaan.

Don Hersam was a solid citizen, a straight shooter, and an honorable man of integrity, devoted to his family, his community and his church. It was my privilege to know him, and a great pleasure to be part of the Gridiron show that celebrated and honored his life.

My sincerest condolences to the Hersam family. Don knew my family and took an interest in everyone's well-being when I knew him. It was an honor and a privilege to serve with him on the Board of Genesis, Inc. in New Canaan. Although I was just an adolescent, he treated me with the greatest respect and was a thoughtful listener to my views. I wrote a letter to the editor during a very turbulent time - the Vietnam War. Don could have decided to not publish it or edit it like crazy. To his credit, he did not. I will never forget it.

The Chief hired me in 1979. I quickly learned that when the town fire alarm went off, you cleared the way. As a long time member of St Aloysius Church, Don was known to help people in any way he could. I remember him asking me to help a family find work and a place to live. I did so, but the Chief never forgot them. He frequently asked about their progress. The Chief was there for me when my husband John was terminally ill. Don gave me free reign to do whatever I needed to do. After my husbands death, the Chief and the Hersam family made me a part of their family, making sure I was ok. Right up to just a few weeks ago, Don would call me and make sure I was ok. I will miss him more than words can say. God bless you Chief, I miss you already.
