Obituary of Margaret Sauerhoff

Margaret C. Sauerhoff, 86, of New Canaan, CT, passed away on July 30, 2014 at The Village at Waveny surrounded by the love of her family. Margaret was born on August 12, 1927 in Columbus, OH to the late Reverend Charles Melvin and Mary Lovell Coulter. She married John E. Sauerhoff Jr. (Jack) in 1950 who predeceased her in 1999. They met in Washington, DC while she worked as the Director of Religious Education at Emory Methodist Church. Prior to moving to New Canaan, Margaret and Jack lived in Silver Spring and then Bethesda, MD where she happily devoted her time to raising their five children. Margaret has resided in New Canaan since 1966. She retired in 1996 after 15 years as the librarian at the Miller Driscoll School in Wilton. Prior to that, she was the library aide at East Elementary School in New Canaan for ten years. She graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1949 and earned a Master of Library Science degree from Southern Connecticut State College in 1978. For the past 48 years, Margaret was a member of the United Methodist Church in New Canaan where she sang in the choir, was certified as a lay speaker and enjoyed serving on many committees. She loved theater and music and was active in the New Canaan Town Players. She was a familiar smiling face in the audience at productions throughout the area. Margaret is survived by her five children and their spouses, John (Barbara) Sauerhoff, of New Canaan, CT, Victor (Debbe) Sauerhoff, of Katonah, NY, David (Nancy) Sauerhoff, of St. Louis, MO, Peggy Ann Sauerhoff (Porter Barber), of Grahamsville, NY and Elizabeth (Robin) McCready, of Stratford, CT. Also surviving Margaret are her grandchildren, Kate, Eric, Peter, Emily, Nathaniel, Jes, Rachel, Hailey and Daniel. She was also predeceased by her sister, Mary Jo Brower of New Jersey in 2013. Margaret will be fondly remembered for her faith, love of family, generosity of spirit and the joy she found in even the simplest of things. A Memorial Service in Margaret’s memory will be held at the United Methodist Church of New Canaan when it reopens following the completion of its renovations in the fall. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Margaret’s name can be made to the United Methodist Church of New Canaan designated for the Caring Committee (165 South Avenue, New Canaan, CT 06840) or Town Players of New Canaan (TPNC.org).
