Obituary of Edna Cody

The memorable Edna Marie Cody 86 of New Canaan died peacefully of complications from Leukemia on Friday Oct. 2. Edna was born February 14, 1923 to Marie Georg Stropagel and Erwin R. Stropagel of Ozone Park, Queens, N.Y. She was a graduate of Bishop McDonald High School in New York. Edna married John J. Cody in 1953, and although John died in 1980, Mom would say she had 56 wonderful years married to the same man. Edna was an exceptional mother and person to emulate, firm in her common sense approach to life, religious beliefs and love of all. Edna touched and changed the lives for the better of all who were fortunate enough to have known her and was considered “Mom or grandma” by many. Edna was a resident of New Canaan for 42 years, an active parishioner of St. Aloysius Church and a member and former Regent of the Catholic Daughters of America. She was an early example of a modern mom, working as a home health aid for the Visiting Nurse Association of New Canaan for some 12 years before returning to the business world in 1981 at age 58. She retired at age 70 from Manufacturers Hanover Trust Bank in N.Y.C. as an Executive Assistant to the Vice President. In her retirement years she loved to travel, go to the opera and theater, was an active member of the New Canaan Women’s Club, the New Canaan Book Club, the Senior Center and a Peer Volunteer. Edna is survived by her four children: J. Christopher Cody and his wife Mary Davis Cody of New Canaan; Mary Cody Capone and her husband George T. Capone of Baltimore, MD; Patricia Cody-Otero and her husband Julian Otero of Madrid, Spain; and John Joseph Cody and his wife Cynthia Paul Cody of Fairfield CT. Also her six wonderful grandchildren: Lauren Marie Capone, Katie Cody, James Cody, Sean M. Cody, Christopher R. Cody and Daniel K. Capone.
