I am Ed's brother in law. In many ways he was an opposite of me. Ed was a polished business executive, always impeccably dressed, articulate, thoughtful, and a Virginia southerner totally comfortable in the upper eschelons of the New York investment world. When I first met Ed I was an intern in medicine at the University of Iowa, poorly dressed, living at poverty wages, and a country bumpkin by Connecticut standards living in Iowa. One time when I came east to see Betsy and Ed, he took me to NYC to get properly dressed. We went to a fashionable conservative mens shop where he was a regular and bought a very nice 3 piece suit so that I could look better. My check bounced however so Ed paid the bill. I am sure this confirmed his suspician that I was untrainable. As the years went by I think he grew to respect me though we could never talk business because of my ignorance in such affairs.
However he did give me some of his discarded ties from his extensive collection which I appreciated.
Ed was a good father and a great husband to my sister Betsy. We shall miss him.

Our deepest sympathies to the extended LeGard family on the loss of a wonderful individual-father, grandfather and friend of so many.We knew and loved Ed ( and Betsy) for dozens of years in both New Canaan and Vero and always remember being happy in his presence- funny, articulate, smart and just a well- rounded Virginia gentleman always. We shall miss him and his smile and are richer for having known him.
