Obituary of Barbara Donalds

Barbara Bordenave Donalds, a thirty-year resident of Darien, who currently lived in Stamford, passed away at the Richard Rosenthal Hospice Residence in Stamford on September 18 after a courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). Born on August 1, 1934 in St. Paul, Minnesota to Marjorie Flanagan Bordenave and Alphonse Paul Bordenave. Barbara graduated from Derham Hall High School in St.Paul in 1952 and received a BA in music from the College of St. Catherine in 1956. She continued her studies at Chicago Musical College of Roosevelt University, receiving a Master of Music degree in Voice in 1959. That same year she married William L. Donalds. They were married for 46 years until his untimely death in 2006. They moved to the New York area in 1960 and resided in Massapequa. In 1966 Bill’s job took them to the Niagara Falls area. Another relocation brought them to Darien in 1973. Barbara turned her musical talents to singing lullabies to their six children before agreeing in 1978 to direct the Park Street Singers, a 35-voice women’s chorale that specialized in entertaining the elderly with popular music from the past. She volunteered as their director for 28 years, performing for more than 30 organizations each year. In 1981 she became the Choir Director at St. Thomas More Church in Darien. She conducted the Children’s Choir, the Youth Group, and an all volunteer Adult Choir for 20 years. For the past 8 years she was the Director of Music at St. Gabriel’s Church in Stamford. In 1982 she became an active member of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians, and was a founder of the local chapter in the Bridgeport Diocese. She has served on their board for 27 years, four of them as Chapter Director. In 1996 and again in 2006 she was the local coordinator for the NPM regional conventions held in Stamford. Barbara is survived by her six children. William L. Donalds, Jr. and wife Kelley of Bridgewater, MA; Thomas J. Donalds and wife Tania of Woolpit, England; Marjorie D. McGovern and husband Jeffrey of Stamford; Kevin J. Donalds and wife Nadine of New Canaan, Susan D. O’Brian and husband Gerald of Chester, NJ; and Jennifer D. Barahona and husband Joseph Oscar of Norwalk. She is also survived by her ten beloved grandchildren: Victoria, Jeffrey, and Olivia McGovern, Billy, Joseph, Matthew, Jack and Maya Donalds, Ava Barahona, and Dylan O’Brian. She leaves her sister, Marjorie and her husband Jeron of San Rafael, CA and her brother Robert and wife Anna of Creal Springs, IL. Visitation hours will be on Sunday, September 20, from 2-6pm at the Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main Street, New Canaan. There will be a brief prayer service at 5:30pm followed by remembrances from family and friends. A funeral Mass of Resurrection will be held on Monday, September 21 at 11am at St. Thomas More, 374 Middlesex Road, Darien. Burial will follow in Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Barbara’s memory to the ALS Association, 4 Oxford Road, Unit D-4 Milford, CT 06460, or a charity of your choice.
