Obituary of Elizabeth Black
Elizabeth Mildred Black (Sackmann) passed away peacefully on September 13, 2009, in
Redding, Connecticut. She was born in Newark, New Jersey on September 17, 1923 and
was raised in Maplewood, New Jersey. She was the wife of Donald, to whom she was
married for 58 years, until his passing in 2005.
She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry from Mount Holyoke College in
1945, attaining Phi Beta Kappa membership. She then received a Master of Science
degree in chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She was elected to
membership in the Sigma Xi honorary society. Following graduation she was employed
in laboratories engaged in pharmaceutical research.
She had a life-long interest in the Girl Scouts of America, earning several ranks as a
youth and holding adult leadership positions in the Connecticut Council.
She is survived by two sons Donald of Darien, Connecticut and Thomas of Wayland,
Massachusetts, two daughters Holly Grillo of Nashua, New Hampshire and Barbara
Quinn of Wickford, Rhode Island, a nephew John Boyd of Columbia, South Carolina, a
niece Nina Mahaffey of Santa Barbara, California, nine grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
