Obituary of Madeleine Main
Madeleine S. Main of Norwalk, formerly a longtime resident of New Canaan, and a life-long member of the United Methodist Church of New Canaan.
She was born in Brooklyn, NY on November 16, 1915, the daughter of John Walter Main and Susette Allio Main. Her family were summer residents of New Canaan. In 1920 they became year-round residents and she entered in the first grade of the old Center School. She graduated from New Canaan High School in 1934. After attending secretarial school she became secretary to the late John Brotherhood and served as secretary/Treasurer of the present Brotherhood & Higley Real Estate firm from 1940 until her retirement in 1989. She received a certificate in real estate from the University of Connecticut. She also worked for the Colonial Company, the company responsible for the widening of Elm Street and the construction of many of the stores and offices in the red-brick Colonial-style architecture of downtown New Canaan. During World War II she was on the Women’s Team for the New Canaan Ground Observation Post. The Observation Post was located in Oenoke Ridge and was operated 24 hours a day with a direct line to the Army. During the beginning years of the New Canaan Town Players, she served as Secretary, Treasurer and on the Board of Directors. She also worked on many early shows. She was a long time member of the New Canaan Historical Society and the Roton Point Beach Club. She was predeceased by her two brothers, John A. Main and Thomas W. Main and one sister, Marie Main Hammack. Surviving are 5 Nieces; Elizabeth Leidhold of Mattapoisett, Mass., Susette Fontelieu of New Freedom, PA, Wendy Elmore of Fairfield, CT, Joan Thomas and Margaret Randall both of California and 3 Nephews; Theodore Hammack of Wilton, CT. John R. Main and Douglas W. Main both of California. Contributions in memory may be made to the Untied Methodist Church of New Canaan. Burial services at the family plot in Lakeview Cemetery will be private. A Memorial will be scheduled for early November for family and friends.
