Obituary of Stephen J. Walsh Jr.

STEPHEN J. WALSH JR. (1926-2020) Stephen J. Walsh Jr., 93, of New Canaan, CT passed away on April 2, 2020. A lifelong resident of New Canaan, Steve was born on Oct. 6, 1926 and died peacefully of natural causes at Norwalk Hospital. The Walsh family has deep roots in New Canaan. Steve Jr. is the son of Marie (Stone) and New Canaan Police Officer Stephen Walsh Sr. He is pre-deceased by his loving wife, Grace (Hutchinson) Walsh, and his brothers, New Canaan postal carrier John (“Jack”) Walsh, and florist business owner Donald (“Dinty”) Walsh. A hardworking man, Steve was proud of the house he built (1955) in New Canaan. He gladly shared all of the stories about his New Canaan town friends, who helped one another construct the new settlement areas of the town at that time. He was a graduate of New Canaan High School (Class of 1944) and began his working career at New Canaan’s Cushman Brothers Co., Inc. and Chatterton (Allied Van Lines) before his 30+ years as a truck driver for Arnold Bakery (Bimbo Bakeries USA) in Greenwich, CT. His CB Radio good buddies will recall him from his handle “2Step,” as in Stephen Jr and his dancing talent. Steve was an entire career member of the Teamsters and celebrated any opportunity to advise on providing driving directions to anywhere in the country. Steve could tell you the exact route numbers and best traffic patterns to get you there, particularly for trips to the White Mountains of New Hampshire, where he took many family camping vacations. A devout religious man, Steve was received as a professed member of the Secular Franciscan Order and a part of the Diocesan Healing Team of the Charismatic Renewal. He was also a member of The Knights of Columbus New Canaan (St. Aloysius Church) and Norwalk (St. Matthews Church) Chapters. Steve was an extremely proud family man. He is survived by his six children: Stephen Walsh III and his wife Debra (Jordan) of New Canaan; Kathleen Walsh of Stratford; Barbara Walsh of Ridgefield; Cynthia (Walsh) Lewis of Brookfield; Sheila (Walsh) Schanck and her husband Chris of Marriottsville, MD; and Gregory and his wife Pamela (Stoklosa) of Fairfield. He is also survived by his 14 grandchildren: Jessica (Max) Garrison and Stephen Walsh IV; Michelle, Jason and Matthew Mansour; Ian (Olivia) and Shaina Mahoney; Nicole (Jarus Lazeski) Hayes, Crystal (Michael) Riverso, and Michael Hayes; Faith and Lane Schanck; Ryan and Cecelia Walsh; and three great grandchildren, Elodie and Remy Garrison, and Cameron Riverso. Other surviving close friends and family members are Jan Hilton of New Canaan, Muriel Walsh, James and Doris Hutchinson, Peter Frank, and the godchildren, nieces and nephews of the Walsh, Hutchinson and Frank families. A private graveside service will be held on Monday, April 6, at St John’s Cemetery, Richard’s Avenue in Norwalk. A Memorial Mass at St Aloysius Church in New Canaan will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The Autism Services and Resources of Connecticut (https://ctasrc.z2systems.com/np/clients/ctasrc/donation.jsp).
