I am deeply saddened to learn of Bud's passing. My deepest condolences and love to Bud's family and friends.
Bud and I met when we were a few years out of college, working in New York and volunteering. We mentored and tutored NYC high school students, every weekend, and during weekdays after work, starting with four students - Bud worked with Taj - and together with about five other friends, eventually cofounded Minds Matter in 1991, which is a national organization today that supports hundreds of students every year. The students we used to tutor now mentor the next generation. After New York, we scattered to the winds and our paths crossed again in Philly and San Francisco. Bud was a bright light whose humor, passion for life (especially skiing) fueled us all. You will be missed, Bud. Rest in peace. All my love, Irina

Losing Bud this suddenly has really been hard. We spent a great Saturday afternoon in the sun watching a lacrosse game just a week before he passed. I’ve known Bud most of my life, and our paths have always managed to cross, so that we never lost touch and could pick up where we left off, even if had been a couple years. Shared a hometown, HS lax, post b-school in SF, a little overlap in VA, and most recently in CO. I can’t think about Bud without thinking of his self-deprecating sense of humor... when he and the rest of us all knew it didn’t really work, because he was such a driven, talented, successful and passionate man, who gave so much of himself to and for others. I am gutted to think of his kiddos, right now. To all of his family, my thoughts and prayers are with you all. To Sheila, it was wonderful to speak with you and share some very recently interactions with Bud... I truly did not see this coming... Bud was always Bud, he was hilarious, seemingly happy, and didn’t volunteer any pain and discomfort he was in. I’ll miss him very much. Rest in peace Buddy!

My deepest condolences to Bud's family and friends.
Bud was an amazing, funny, ENERGETIC and creative presence at BigStep. And boy could you take a joke - even a rather mean-spirited comment from my very immature former self. I’m sure you moved on quickly because that’s what you did - ignore the negative and keep pushing the positive forward.
I remember how you took a group of folks to Hawai’i to work on a top-secret project you spearheaded. You were not just creative, but generous and able to bring out the best in people and get things done right.
I’m so happy to see that you turned you boundless energy towards philanthropic causes. The world is a better place because of you. I wish you could have stayed with us longer and I’m sending condolences to your family and friends on your Memorials page.
I’m feel like I’m being pretty sappy over a guy I didn’t even spend that much time with - except when we were in the incubator (in Fire Engine Red, was it?) and all cramped together!
I haven’t seen you in decades, but I’ll miss you, Bud.
Love to all, give everyone you love big hugs -
Julie

When I joined Bigstep, where Bud and I both worked during the “dot-com boom,” the busy HR department (which was one woman!) started assigning new hires like me “buddies” that would show us the lay of the land. Lucky for me, Bud was my buddy. I probably wouldn’t have known him much otherwise, as we never worked together on a project. Bud was a fantastic buddy. He jumped right into welcoming me and took me to lunch, which became a tradition we continued for the whole time we both worked there. I was a little wary at first of his 110%, hard-charging manner, but once it was clear there was no malice behind it, we became friends. We continued to keep in touch over sporadic emails for years afterward.
Coming back from one of our Bigstep buddy lunch trips one day, Bud gave his leftovers to a homeless man sitting on Mission Street. He offered the plastic takeout container so forcefully that he surprised the guy, who refused at first. But Bud won him over! Always the salesman. After that, I teased him about being a closeted socialist. He waved me off. Turns out I was wrong. As I learned from Bud's obituary here, he wasn’t closeted at all.
I can’t believe he’s gone. He was such a bright light.
My condolences to Bud’s family.

I am shocked to hear this news. After he and I both left Yahoo, he became CEO of a venture-funded startup and asked me to join his Board. I got to know him much better. His positive energy was always present, but I most remember his ethical stances he held firm to support his employees as he and the Board wound down the company. Those are the things people remember. I remember he was upset when his father died then, sadly. I was disappointed when he went back east after that. This is a shock. What happened? I am so sorry to hear. My thoughts are with his family. I am very surprised.

My condolences to Bud’s family. I was very sad to hear this horrible news. Bud and I met as I brought him in to be Entrepreneur-in-Residence at my firm Charles River Ventures. He was an upstanding model of integrity as an entrepreneur. His integrity in some difficult situations I will always remember. Very few would have stood up and done the right thing. He did. I always remember this about him. - George Zachary

I was close friends with Buddy while at Bates College and then lived with him for a year in Park City, UT. We had some great times together and it saddens me to think that we'd lost touch over the years.
Mrs. R & Teddy - I'm very sorry for your loss.
Sincerely,
Bill Whalen
