My most sincere condolences to Evelyn and family on your loss. May the Grace of God and Peace through Christ be with you always.
I met LeRoy at Fort Leavenworth, KS. He was an inspiration to me in many ways. In my time there, I met my wife and LeRoy administered the marriage rites.
Through the years since, thoughts of LeRoy and Evelyn have been with me. It was the recent thought and image of LeRoy which caused me to want to reconnect. As I searched, it was a sad realization I was too late.

We were saddened to hear of Pastor Ness's passing away - Mrs. Ness and family you are in our thoughts! We were congregants in Rhinebeck at Third Lutheran during a tough time in our lives - my medical residency and Jason's army service at West Point and deployment to Kuwait - Pastor Ness was a guiding light and so supportive, and the reason we joined the Third Lutheran community while we lived in Rhinebeck! We remember our first visit to the church he came up to us right away and talked to us, then referenced us in his sermon! He truly lived a Christ-like life and inspired all of us to do the same! He positively affected our lives so much, and I know thousands of others. He is certainly in heaven with our Savior!

As a young, budding vicar at Trinity Lutheran in Kinston, NY, LeRoy fast become my mentor as he supervised and challenged me to grow as a servant leader in the church. Every day with LeRoy was an adventure, and as a vicar, you rolled up your sleeves and joined him in whatever task was ahead. He never told you exactly what to do, he let you figure it out. He had an uncanny ability to cause you to dive deep within yourself, and uncover your talents and bring your gifts out into the open. He knew every vicar had their own unique personality and he wanted you to be confident and become your own person. I loved and admired him for what always seemed to be an unwavering bravery and confidence. I honestly thought he would live forever with his love and zest for life. I will miss him greatly and will be forever grateful for his influence on my professional and personal development. I can still hear his voice and many of his phrases. He used to say, "Live life for adventure, not security. Security is a myth." And yes, dear mentor. I'm still trying to keep the turds out of my pocket. Another word of advise from LeRoy, "I can teach you a lot about being a pastor, but I can't teach you to love your people." I thank you and Evelyn for being there for me and for providing me one of the greatest learning experiences of my life. Your memory will never fade and I thank God for you. Shaun McFarland, Vicar at Trinity Lutheran Church (1995-96)

Breakfast in the basement of Atonement on Wednesday mornings with Pastor Ness was always a highlight of my visits to N.Y. Often drawing on his experiences, he would always have a message to uplift us and promote the values he lived. Thankful to have been a small part of his ministry.

I was deeply moved by the witness of LeRoy. He was a wonderful interim during my time as Associate to the Bishop, well organized, compassionate and focused. I give thanks to God for his work in our church.

My Pastor, my friend, and often times my conscience. I'll always remember when he placed me in the pulpit as the voice of God during a children's play one Sunday. And then I served communion to him. That meant a lot to me.
