I met Al on the Floor of the NYSE in the late 90's - early 2000's when our companies came together. Al was definitely one of the good guys. Always there with a joke, always there to help. Like others, I was helped by him when I was rushed from the Floor to the hospital. One call from him and by the time I got to the hospital, the best doctors in the building were there to treat me. Phenomenal man. My condolences to the entire Smith family.

I met Al about 8 years ago when he visited my store in New Canaan. Always a Good man, gentleman and a wealth of knowledge. I was lucky that I got to bump into a week ago on my way home. He always had a kind word to say or a joke. Al will definitely be missed. My Condolences to Nan and the rest of the family

In 1976 I worked as a Reporter in the Garage on the floor of the NYSE reporting on sales of stocks for Specialists Adler Coleman. Al Smith IV was always a very personable, happy and memorable broker in that room. Al always had a smile on his face and I will never, ever forget him, Rest In Peace.

Al, you were every bit the "Happy Warrior" of the original and even more original throughout your life. You will be missed for your indomitable spirit and for all the good you did in this life. Anyone of your friends could tell stories of how you helped them. There are so many of us. I know you felt our love and gratitude when you were with us. I hope your family knows it will never be forgotten and we will be here for them. Goodbye for now, Al.

I knew Al (and know Nan) as President of the Global Tracheostomy Collaborative. We cold-called Al, met him and Nan for lunch, and they immediately threw themselves tirelessly into our mission, joined our board, chaired one of our committees, and perhaps most important, elevated all of our spirits and inspired all of us to do more. A great gentleman, colleague, altruist, friend. All of us who knew him are blessed.

Al and I met at Iona Grammar in 1963 and became fast friends. He was quick with a joke, smart, friendly and always happy. My kind of guy.
I spent many a night at the Smith household in Rye, blending in with his large family and always feeling welcomed by his wonderful parents. We were lifelong buddies.
I suspect there are a lot of us out there who were buddies with Al. Extremely popular, everybody liked Al. He was the ultimate "Rye Boy" back in the day, but never snobby or superior. Always just happy and smiling. Good old Al.
I was lucky to have lunch with him in New Canaan recently where he lamented about his friends being gone. Now, Ed, Jay, Steve and Al can play a round of golf together again and have a beer.
Farewell my old friend. You left a legendary legacy of friendship behind.
Our best to Nan and the entire family.

I met Al on the floor in the early 1980’s. Always a kind and friendly man, we were friendly but never very close. When in a frightening time of medical need, I asked for some advice or help. Al had me set up with an appointment and in front of some of the best doctors in the world within minutes. I am forever grateful to this wonderful gentleman. There are countless stories like mine. My deepest sympathies to his family. I am proud to have known this fine gentleman

I was a member of the NYSE and worked in the garage with Al when he was a specialist, a great human being and a lot of fun to work with. I will always remember him, but after reading all the comments on facebook about all of the people he helped I am truly amazed. My son is a priest and he is in Rome for his last year, I will ask him to say a Mass for Al in Rome

I was a partner of Al's at Adler, Coleman. I remember once my father-in-law was suffering greatly from pain. I asked Al if he could recommend a doctor at St. Vincent's. In less than one hour Al came back to me with the phone number of the chief of the department. And what struck me as truly wonderful was when i called to make the appointment, the receptionist said "Oh yes, Mr Axelrod, we were expecting your call". Al always went the extra step in helping people in any way he possible could. A truly wonderful man indeed

I’m so sorry to hear of Al’s sudden death.
I’ve known Al since the early 70’s since He became a member at the NYSE and I was a Specialist clerk for Adler Coleman & Co. On a lighter note back in the day I was invited up to Al’s for the weekend when our Friday night started with a few drinks and I headed up to Westchester with Al & Danny Mahoney
At Dinner with Danny I had Shrimp Scampi and when I woke up on Saturday morning I reeked of beer and garlic Al told me to get dressed that we were going to I believe it was his Sister’s Communion. Al introduced me to the Family as “ Smelly Kelly “
On a more serious note and one in which I will be forever grateful, I was diagnosed in 1999 with 3rd Stage
Non Hodgkins Lymphoma and Jimmy Maguire, the Senior Partner at Henderson Bros., who also was a True Blessing to me at the time told his Son Paul “ Get me Al Smith” I had an Appointment the next day with Dr. Timothy Gee At St. Vincent’s and in my years of treatment there I was taken care of with kid gloves because of my connection with Al. When I entered the Hospital I entered in The Smith Building and I was treated in The Coleman Wing named after John A. Coleman who was The Senior Partner At Adler Coleman when I was a clerk That was 20 Years ago
And by the Grace of God, prayers and the excellent treatment I received I am currently in Remission and Ironically working as a Concierge at The Greenwich Lane which is the Site of the Former St. Vincent’s Hospital
To Nan and Family I’m truly sorry for you loss
Respectfully,
Tom Kelly
