My whole family is so proud and pleased to have known both Lillian and Curry. They were already pillars of the New Canaan United Methodist Church when we joined, back in 1985, and they were wonderful friends and mentors for all of us - but especially for my son, Sebastian. Curry gave Sebastian his first philosophy book - by Dewey - when Sebastian was 14, and both he and Lillian encouraged our bookish, and therefore rather lonely, boy to read and think. They even renamed their wonderful Adult Education study group "Higher Education" so that Sebastian could join in. I always loved sitting next to Lillian at the UMW events. She was witty and wise, and such a trailblazer - such a role model for us all! My husband Tim and I were honored to be invited to Lillian's 100th birthday party, and glad to hear at that time that she would be spending more time closer to her family.
My birthday is also December 26. I have always thought of Lillian on that day, and that will not change. I am grateful for her example of life extraordinarily well-lived.
