Obituary of Kathryn S. Cunningham
Kathryn (Katy) Cunningham, 97, longtime resident of New Canaan, CT, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on December 31, 2018. Born on January 30, 1921, the only child of Robert and Augusta Richter Stansbury, Katy was raised in Houston, Texas where she graduated from Rice University. She worked as an employment agent while dating and then marrying her beloved husband of 62 years, the late Charles Cunningham, Jr.
Katy was a homemaker, a traveler and a lifetime gardener. She traveled the world extensively with her husband, and later became a travel agent in Greenwich and New Canaan. After moving to New Canaan in 1962 she became a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan. Katy was an active member of the New Canaan Garden Club, Bridge Club, and Dance Club. She was a founding member of the PEO chapter of New Canaan as well as a leader in the Girls Scouts of Fairfield County, taking her troop to Bermuda and working county wide. Katy and her husband were members of Woodway Country Club for many years enjoying their love of golf, bridge, and dancing. In retirement they enjoyed fishing in Hatteras, NC and spent many wonderful winters enjoying the weather in Fort Myers, Fl before moving to Meadow Ridge Senior residence in Redding, CT.
Katy was blessed with a family who loved her and will miss her dearly. She was predeceased by her daughter Nancy Cunningham Clark (Bill Broach) of San Mateo, CA and is survived by her daughter Barbara Schneider (Bob) of Bedford, NY and son Chuck Cunningham (Mary) of Wilton, CT. She also leaves behind 5 grandchildren, Matt Schneider (Michelle), Kirsten Ayaz (Neil), Julianna Clark, Charlie Cunningham (Allison), and Greg Cunningham. They always brought a smile to her face. In addition Katy leaves behind 3 adorable great-grandchildren, Zach Schneider, Maya Schneider and Isabel Ayaz.
The family plans a private interment at the First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan.
