Harriet MacMaster

Obituary of Harriet Hurd MacMaster

Harriet (Hat) Hurd MacMaster, age 89, a resident of New Canaan since 1959 died Tuesday, November 20, 2018 at Waveny Care Center while recuperating from a hip replacement. Born in Milford, CT on September 9, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Elizabeth Emerson and Melville Noble Hurd. She was predeceased by two husbands, George G. MacMaster and John C. White.

Harriet was a “world class” mother and grandmother!  “Mrs. Mac” (many called her) was the ultimate caregiver and always made sure all were comfortable around her. She had strong values, was fun loving, intelligent, spontaneous and was always teaching family to be the best they could be. She will be deeply missed.

Early in her career she worked for Cushman Bros. & Co. and was a private duty nurse at Waveny Care Center. She was later a Realtor in town for her sister’s firm, Murphy Real Estate. She was active at the Congregational Church and was a past member of the choir and Park Street Singers.

Harriet loved to fish!  It was how she wanted to spend her 88th birthday. She loved the water and spent much time in St. Croix at Sprat Hall Plantation. She was an avid reader her whole life and loved to sing, garden, cook and was always creating something, especially crafts and using her jigsaw for wood working projects. She loved animals, especially cats, dogs and enjoyed bird watching.  One of her greatest joys was making people laugh. She turned into quite a comedian in her later years.

Harriet is survived by two daughters, Martha Seymour (and son-in-law Christopher D. Seymour) of Fairfield, Laura Danforth of New Canaan, her son George Galloway Mac Master of Patterson, CA and five grandchildren, Julia E. Danforth, Kendall E. Danforth, Jacqueline M. Seymour, Hunter M. Danforth, George C. Seymour, her sister, Betty Murphy as well as many treasured nieces, nephews and a wonderful circle of friends. Three stepchildren, John and Robert White and Susan Messervey, six step grandchildren, and two step great grandchildren. She was predeceased by six siblings.  Ruth Wilkinson, John, Mel and Donald Robert Hurd, Martha Werner and James Hurd and by a step daughter Laurie Greer.

She loved giving and receiving a long heartfelt hug. Please hug your loved ones in her honor!

A memorial service will be held at The Congregational Church on December 29th and 1:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to New Canaan Cares, specifically the Elder Buddies program.
