Obituary of Jerene Wachtel

Jere Yokoyama Wachtel of New Canaan, Manalapan, Florida and Honolulu, Hawaii, passed away suddenly on April 22, 2009. She leaves behind a husband, Kenny, two daughters, Lauren and Jesse, and a sister, Janice Trubitt. Jere attended The Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii, Mount Holyoke College and the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, where she earned an MBA in Finance. She worked as an executive at Citibank, PepsiCo, Cresap McCormick & Paget, Chemical Bank and Chase Bank in a variety of senior level financial and marketing positions. Jere was responsible for the integration and seamless transition of all Chemical Bank branches in several mergers with other national banks. In the community, Jere was a member of the Encore Club, National Charity League, Learning to Look, Post Prom Committee, Good Eats and Crafters. For two years, she was the chief administrator of the New Canaan Soccer Association, and handled many seasons as the Team Manager of travel soccer teams as well. Jere spent time as a volunteer in the Principal’s office at New Canaan High School over the last four years, as well as Editor of the Ram-O-Gram. Jere’s uncle, Sadao Munemori, was the only original Japanese-American soldier awarded the Congressional Medal Of Honor in World War II. She traveled to California and Italy, making speeches and participating in the dedication of statues, buildings and highways named in his honor. Jere also transcribed interviews with internees for the Manzanar National Historic Site in Lone Pine, California.
