Obituary of Marie-Therese Moyer
Marie-Thérèse Moyer, 82, passed away peacefully April 28 at Waveny Care Center. She was born in 1931 and raised in Cairo, Egypt. Her father was ethnic Syrian and her mother ethnic Italian. Therese grew up with two sisters and a half-brother, attended a Catholic school run by Irish nuns, and had a very close relationship with her family members throughout her life. The diverse background in which she was raised shaped the way for Therese to be fluent in five languages including Arabic, English, Italian, French, and Spanish.
Thérèse became proficient in racquet sports in her teen years. She also mastered the piano, playing classical pieces to the delight of her audience. After getting her diploma she began working as a multilingual secretary to ICI, then switched to Esso. In 1957 Esso moved her and her mother to Beirut, Lebanon to work for the CFO of Esso Near East. In 1958 she met her future husband, Peter Moyer, at Esso. She was transferred in 1960 with other Esso Near East staff to Geneva, Switzerland. Therese married Peter in Spring of 1963 in Geneva, and moved with him to New Canaan, CT.
The family became members at the Lake Club in Wilton, CT, where Thérèse was one of the top tennis team members for many years. She also took up paddle tennis and was on Club teams throughout the winter months.
A devout Catholic and Saint Aloysius parishioner, Thérèse became a Dame of Malta in 1994, making several pilgrimages to Lourdes in France and participating in the Order’s local projects with dedication.
In the early 1990s, the effects of Alzheimer’s Disease began to rob her of her skills -- needlework, racquet sports, and piano. By the end of 2001 Therese was unable to continue living at home. She was a patient at Waveny Care Center in New Canaan from February of 2002 until her death.
Thérèse is survived by her husband, Peter Moyer of New Canaan, CT, her sister, Nadia Agaman of Burbank, CA, her step-daughter Susan Moyer of Spokane, WA, her son Mark Moyer of New York, NY, her daughter Paula Moyer of Sudbury, MA, grandchildren Ryan, Veronica, and Jack Moyer and Max and Ann Badowsky. She was pre-deceased by her brother, Joseph Kahil and sister, Germaine Mourani.
