Obituary of William McCarthy
William Charles McCarthy, age 92, formerly of Stratford and longtime resident of Stamford died peacefully Friday evening, Feb 22, 2013 at Waveny Care Center in New Canaan surrounded by his loving wife and daughters. Born in Oswego, NY, July 24, 1920, he was the son of the late William L. and Hilda Schaufler McCarthy. He is married to Ruth Owen McCarthy.
Bill, as he was known, received a degree in journalism from the University of Michigan. He enlisted in the Air Force at the start of World War II and served as a navigator in the 456th Bomb Group, 15th Air Force, participating in 50 bombing missions. After the war, he pursued a career in advertising. In 1956, he accepted a position in New York City and the family re-located from Utica, New York to Stamford. Bill was a lifelong lover of sports and particularly enjoyed playing tennis and golf. In retirement, he was active in the Stamford Senior Men’s Club and was an avid reader. He and Ruth both enjoyed winters spent in Scottsdale, Arizona where they relaxed and made many new friends.
In addition to his wife Ruth, survivors include four daughters, Gail Neves and her husband Simon of London, England, Susan Williams and her husband Thomas of Arlington, VT, Jill McCarthy and her husband Barry Stoll of Dedham, MA, and Rue McCarthy and her husband Yamasa of Stamford. Five grandchildren, Alexander and Nicholas Neves, Bryan and Sydney Stoll, and Evan Williams also survive.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at 12:30 PM at St. Aloysius Church, Cherry Street ,New Canaan. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Juvenile Diabetes or the Waveny Care Center in New Canaan, CT. The Hoyt Funeral Home, New Canaan has charge of the arrangements.
