Peter Douglas Meyer died at Waveny Care Center in New Canaan on February 21, 2013, after a long struggle with Lewy Body Dementia. He was 76 years old. Born on June 15, 1935, in Manhattan, he was the son of the late Edna P. Blair and the late Maxmillian “Mack” Meyer. He married his wife of 46 years, Wendy Halstead, in 1966 and moved to New Canaan in 1973. After graduating from Hofstra University in 1956, Mr. Meyer proudly served as an officer in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958 and then served as a member of the Army Reserves. He joined IBM in 1958, where he worked for 35 years before retiring in 1993. He served on the board of the New Canaan Senior Center and as a deacon for the Congregational Church of New Canaan. He was a member of the Fairfield Investment Group, the New Canaan Field Club, the Senior Men’s Club and the New Canaan Roundtable. He was also an active member of the Parent-Faculty Association at New Canaan High School, serving as president in 1987. Mr. Meyer cherished his family, friends, his beloved golden retriever, Cody, and the salt air of Chatham, Massachusetts. In addition to his wife, Mr. Meyer is survived by his son, Doug, and his wife Stafford of Bronxville, New York, his daughter, Jen, and her husband Pat Ryan of Chicago, six grandchildren, Reagan, JT and Lawson Meyer, Beau, Finn and Brooks Ryan, and his nephew, Richard Dennis Meyer, Jr. of Holmes Beach, Florida. He is predeceased by his brother, Richard Dennis Meyer of Seattle, Washington and his nephew, Glenn Meyer, of Holmes Beach, Florida. The family is extremely grateful to Masonicare’s hospice team and the Special Care Unit at Waveny Care Center for the outstanding, compassionate care they provided. Most of all, we are indebted to our close friends who have been there, in force, for us throughout Peter’s illness.
