Obituary of Avis Tippman

Avis June Covert Tippman, 91, a long-time resident of New Canaan, passed away at the Waveny Care Center on January 28, following a long illness. She was born in Herkimer, New York, on April 19, 1921, to George Earl Covert and Pearl Foudy. In 1933, she moved to Stamford, Connecticut, and attended Stamford High School, where she graduated in 1939. She graduated from the Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in 1941 and worked at various jobs in New York City during World War II. She married Donald Dunn Tippman in 1942 and moved to New Canaan in 1946. In the late 1950s and 1960s she worked for Jane Mathews on the Dining with Jane and Shopping with Jane columns for the New Canaan Advertiser. From the late 1960s until 1999 she worked for the law firm of Hicks and Sturgis, later Ira Hicks Attorney. Upon retirement she returned to school to get her undergraduate (cum laude) and master’s degrees from Marymount Manhattan in New York City. Avis was active in the New Canaan Congregational Church, where she served as a deacon for many years. She received her pilot’s license in 1945. She was also active in the Fezziwig Society and served as secretary of the New Canaan Cemetery Association. She enjoyed travel and reading. Avis was predeceased by her husband Donald and daughter Patricia Hayes. She is survived by her son Don C. Tippman and daughter-in-law Eve Zibart of Washington Grove, Maryland, niece Catherine Hayes of Brighton, Massachusetts, nephew Richard Hayes of Berkeley, California, and son-law Richard Hayes of Honolulu, Hawaii.
