Obituary of Gifford Kittredge

Gifford “Gif” Kittredge, age 93, formerly of New Canaan, died Friday, January 25, 2013, surrounded by family members in his home at Meadow Ridge. Mr. Kittredge and his wife, the late Anne “Andee” Reynolds Kittredge, lived in New Canaan for 37 years and moved in 2004 to Meadow Ridge, a residential living facility for seniors in Redding, CT. His wife died in 2007. Born in New York City, June 12, 1919, he was the son of the late Henry Chessman and Dorothy Gifford Kittredge. His family lived in Irvington-on-the-Hudson, New York where he attended the Hackley School. He went on to finish his high school education at Phillips Exeter Academy and then attended Harvard College where he graduated in 1940 with a B.S. in Physics. At Exeter and Harvard, Gif was a member of their respective diving teams. While growing up, he spent his summers with his family on Lake Temagami in Ontario, Canada where he was a camper and staff member at Keewaydin Camp. It was during the summer of 1937 that he first met his wife; they were married in 1943 and lived in Washington, D.C. where Mr. Kittredge was serving as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After the War, at age 27, he began a career in the new field of material handling and became an executive engineer and consultant, selling products he designed, and obtaining patents for several of his designs. During his 64 years of marriage, Gif and his wife Andee raised a family while his business career moved them to Irvington, NY; Park Forest, IL; Syracuse, NY; Wilmette, IL; and New Canaan, CT. In New Canaan, they were both active members of the First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan. Gif served as a Deacon, Elder and Clerk of the Session at the Church, and he participated in the Stephen Ministries. For his service with the Stephen Ministries, he received the 1997 Donald J. Cameron Human Kindness Award. He also taught Sunday school and was long-term member of the church choir. Music and song were always part of his life; he learned to play the piano at a young age, and during his childhood, his family sang around the piano at home and around a campfire in Canada. In New Canaan, Gif also sang with the Gentleman Songsters which was one of his first introductions to Meadow Ridge. He and fellow Meadow Ridge residents would take turns singing during their daily morning stretch class. Sailing was also a life-long passion for Gif; his Grandfather had taught him how to sail on Cape Cod, and Gif took his family on several sailing vacations. Mr. Kittredge served on the Board of Director’s of the New Canaan Inn, and was President of that Board from 1985-1990; Vice President of Life Span; President of St. Mark’s Common; Vice President of the Board of Directors for the Senior Center of New Canaan, Inc.; and on the Member Planning Committee for the Stone Cottage Community Center. His memberships included the Seniors Men’s Club of New Canaan, the Silvermine Golf Club, and the Nutmeg Curling Club. Mr. Kittredge is survived by one son David D. Kittredge and his wife Deborah of Worthington, OH; two daughters, Anne Kittredge White and her husband Roger of Duxbury, MA, Joan Gifford Kittredge and her husband Robert Shapiro of New York City; one brother William R. Kittredge and his wife Coren of Yorba Linda, CA; one sister Anne “Nancy” Kittredge Jeffrey and her husband Robert of Columbus, OH; one sister-in-law, and wife of his brother Chessman, Natalie Kittredge of Chagrin Falls, OH.
