Obituary of Barbara Deegan

Barbara Burtis Deegan, 87, a resident of New Canaan, CT for 18 years, formerly of Harrison, NY, passed away Friday, December 28, 2012 at Waveny Care Center in New Canaan. Born in Brooklyn, NY April 4, 1925, she was the daughter of the late T. Alfred and Faith Walsh Burtis. Mrs. Deegan graduated from The Ursuline School in New Rochelle, NY before attending Trinity College in Washington, D.C. where she received a BA in Economics. A life-long learner and education proponent, she became an elementary school teacher and taught for 20 years at the Most Holy Trinity School in Mamaroneck, NY. She is survived by her sons, William Joseph Deegan, Jr. of Ossining, NY and Michael Francis (Barbara) Deegan of Asheville, NC and her daughters, Mary Catherine (Richard) Sheils of Holden, MA, Gaynor Deegan (Keith) Luke of New Canaan, CT, and Elizabeth Deegan (Peter) Sackel of Orlando, FL. Also surviving are her brother T. Alfred Burtis, Jr. of Harrison, NY and her sisters, Constance Burtis McGillicuddy of Harrison, NY and Faith Burtis Doyle, of Miami, FL, as well as ten grandchildren and one great-grandson. Mrs. Deegan was pre-deceased by her daughter Faith Ellen Deegan, her sister Gaynor Burtis Houghton and her former husband Dr. William Joseph Deegan. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Matthew Church, Norwalk, CT on Thursday, January 3, 2013 at 10 am. Interment will follow at Greenwood Union Cemetery, Rye, NY. Hoyt Funeral Home in New Canaan is directing arrangements. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff and volunteers of the Waveny Care Center and to Masonicare Home Health and Hospice.
